Join us for a night of storytelling and music. Brian Katz and Dan Yashinsky will be performing solo and as a duo. They’ll present their original "canta storia" Talking You In, about a father telling stories to a baby in the neo-natal intensive care unit. Dan Yashinsky is the author of Suddenly They Heard Footsteps – Storytelling for the Twenty-first Century. He has performed and taught at festivals in Singapore, Brazil, Ireland, Wales, England, Germany, Austria, Israel, the U.S., and throughout Canada. In l999 he hosted Talking Stick, a national storytelling radio show on CBC. He founded the Toronto Festival of Storytelling in l979. In l999 he received the Jane Jacobs Prize for his work with storytelling in the community.
Brian Katz is an internationally acclaimed guitarist, pianist, recording artist, and music educator. As a performer and composer, he is noted for bringing classical, jazz, Jewish and world music influences to original compositions. Highly regarded as a soloist and composer, Brian also collaborates widely. His partners have included twice grammy nominated saxophonist/flutist Jane Bunnett and saxophonist/bansuri flutist Ernie Tollar (they form the duo, KATZTOLLAR), Grammy winner/tabla master Sukhwinder Singh, classical flautist Barbara Ackerman, virtuoso klezmer clarinetist Martin van de Ven, Yiddish singers Lenka Lichtenberg ,Theresa Tova, Shura Lipovsky and Michael Alpert (of Brave Old World), jazz oboist Paul McCandless (of the group Oregon), and guitarists Mordy Ferber, Rob Piltch and William Beauvais. Of Solana, his CD for the prestigious German label, Bellaphon, the Belgian journal Jazz in Time wrote, "a recording of abundant intelligence.” The Toronto Star called his klezmer CD, Collected Stories, "enchanting." Brian recently worked alongside jazz legend, Barry Harris, conducting mass choral works that featured Dr. Harris as piano soloist. Brian’s latest CD, Pashtes, has received rave reviews (recently, WholeNote CD of the month) and is currently getting airplay in 22 countries. He will mostly be performing his multi-influenced solo guitar works at Zen Waffle Inn. He will also play some jazz standards, some re-harmonized folk tunes ... and lead the participants in some musical games ... why not?
